Stugo constitution waits for approval
A complete revision of the student government constitution of Multnomah Bible College awaits approval by the Student Affairs Committee and the student body. Eli Jones, last year's Stugo parliamentarian, wrote the revision during the spring of 2001.
To rewrite the guiding document of Stugo, Jones researched the constitution's history. He studied constitutions of other colleges. He corresponded online with registered parliamentarians and consulted written works such as "Robert's Rules of Order" and Sturges' "Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure."
"For fun, I based one of my revisions on the government model from the French Revolution," Jones said.
After collecting the necessary materials, Jones wrote four different revisions of the Stugo constitution for Stugo members to consider. He met with President Bordner, the executive cabinet and Stugo's faculty adviser, Bob Bailey. Then Jones presented a final constitution to the general cabinet of Stugo. Stugo unanimously approved Jones' constitution.
Jones submitted to the Student Affairs Committee a constitution that eliminated "anything that didn't contribute to the efficiency of the government," Jones said. He combined the by-laws and the constitution into one simpler document.
Jones also included SWOT and MCO in his revision, two subsidiary organizations under Stugo that had existed for some time, but surprisingly, had never been officially chartered. The new draft is clearer and more organized. For example, Jones eliminated the school song and clearly defined who is able to vote.
Two steps remain for this year's Stugo team to get the new constitution ratified. The Student Affairs Committee must consider and accept the revision. Then a special student body election will determine if students will accept or reject the document.
