New apartments open soon

During the college mid-semester break in October, seminary students will be on the move. The first of two new apartment complexes on 87th Avenue will be ready for single seminary students.

The seminary apartments will be two-bedroom, one bathroom units. The A building, which lies farther north, will house single students; the B building will house married students. According to Lloyd Helm, director of environmental services, the expected completion dates are Oct. 6 for the A building and Nov. 1 for the B building.

The monthly rent for each apartment is $585 and includes all utilities except electricity.

A parking lot behind the complex will provide one space per apartment.

A keycard system will be installed. Instead of issuing keys, the school will issue keycards for access into the apartments. The locks on the doors will have a latch and a deadbolt. Only authorized personnel will have keys that can unlock the doors, should a problem arise with a tenant's keycard.

"The goal is to have the keycard system installed before the move in," Mr. Helm said. "If not, keys will be issued until it can get changed."

The lower level of the apartments will have bathrooms that are handicap accessible. Building A will be fully furnished for single students, and all apartments in both buildings will include a full-service kitchen with a dishwasher and garbage disposal. Laundry facilities will be located in building B.

The apartments will have white walls and ceilings and tan carpet. Kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways will be laid with gray marble-looking linoleum. Windows are located in the kitchen, living room and bedrooms.

Building A living rooms will include a maroon couch and stuffed chair and a honey-colored entertainment center that is more than 6 feet high. A round wood dining table with four black wrought-iron and wood chairs will also be provided. The furnished bedrooms each will have a wood bunk bed, two wood desks, and two desk chairs.

The wood furnishings are solid wood, rather than particle board, according to Mark Wagner, a lead carpentry worker with the campus services department.

Groundbreaking for the apartments began in March, 2002, after the demolition of several old houses occupying the site.

The administration chose Robert Gray Partners, Inc., as the construction company, which also built Aldrich Hall dormitory and Travis-Lovett Hall, the seminary building.
