Katrina McArthur new yearbook editor
Multnomah's new yearbook editor, sophomore Katrina McArthur, always has her camera ready to take a picture. With only two other students on staff, McArthur can't afford to miss any picture-taking opportunities.
Being editor of Multnomah's yearbook means a big time commitment for McArthur. During yearbook workshop, she helps the other staff members. McArthur devotes three to four hours a day outside of class to working on page layouts and writing drafts of stories.
"It's a big responsibility, but I think it's going to be really rewarding," McArthur said. "It's the beginning of the year, so we haven't seen the product of our work yet."
Although the colors for the yearbook have not been decided, the theme is going to be "Impressions." Yearbooks will be available to students at next year's fall registration.
McArthur decided she wanted the position last year when she heard that Ann Staatz, head of Multnomah's journalism department, was looking for a new editor. McArthur was on the yearbook staff last spring semester.
"I thought it would be a good learning experience," McArthur said. She told Professor Staatz of her interest, and McArthur's name was submitted to the student affairs committee for approval. After the committee approved her, McArthur became the yearbook editor.
Some challenges face this year's yearbook. Having a staff of three has made covering all the events and activities difficult. Several people outside the class have helped by volunteering to take pictures.
However, McArthur said she loves watching her staff get excited about what they're doing and seeing the pages come together out of what was once nothing.
"It's uplifting for me to see how excited the staff is getting about putting something together for their school," McArthur said.
McArthur started attending Multnomah after visiting the campus several times with her mother, who graduated from Multnomah last year. "I really liked the environment here," McArthur said. "I told her (my mom) I'd finish at least a year here, and now I'm back so...."
