Make an appointment to meet with God beyond merely studying about Him

Students should step back and evaluate how they spend their time. They may find that they have allowed homework and other activities to encroach on time with God. But students who value a relationship with God will look for ways to meet with him. Try these suggestions:

  • Keep quiet times sacred.
Nothing should take place during a quiet time except being alone with God. Find a secluded place that is free of interruptions. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still and know that I am God...." God is calling you to listen to him and to reflect on his character.

  • Set aside time to meet with an accountability partner.
An accountability partnership lets you "check up" on each other's lives and pray for one another. This is important because without accountability we often fall into a bad routine such as scheduling homework or social activities during time set apart for God.

  • Seek the Lord throughout the day.
When you play guitar, jog or drive, use the time to pray and praise God. Slow down enough to appreciate the beauty and wonder of all the things around you, realizing that God created them all.

  • Take advantage of opportunities to worship and pray together.
Multnomah has many regular events designed for worship and prayer. For example, the first Monday of each month is a day of prayer and fasting on college campuses around the United States. every Wednesday at 4 p.m. students gather in the prayer chapel to pray for the persecuted church.

After you graduate, you will find fewer opportunities for corporate worship and prayer.

These suggestions will help you focus on a relationship with God. Don't be content merely studying about God. Make time to seek him, and your relationship will grow.
