Multnomah's new park
should include bicycle racks

With the renovations taking place around campus, especially the space behind the seminary, now would be a great time to expand the available bike parking.

Have you ever walked into the library on a nice day and noticed the sprawl of bicycles lying around outside? Some days, as many as 10 two-wheel steeds are stuck in bushes, locked to concrete or simply propped against the nearest sturdy object.

Portland is listed as the most bike-friendly city in the United States. Multnomah should recognize the cycling community at school and provide a safe, quality spot to store bikes during class.

On the entire Multnomah campus, students have only one bike rack with four spaces available. And the bike rack isn't locked down to anything to prevent theft. Last year, thieves stole two bicycles on campus and attempted to steal a third.

Installing the needed extra racks would be a good start, but let's not forget how much rain Portland is blessed with.

Bicycles are not cheap, and inclement weather quickly ruins parts. A simple wooden structure that keeps direct rainfall off of the bicycles is needed as well.

The cost to build bicycle racks or buy them is minimal. Bicycle shops sell them for $150 and up, and many stores would be willing to sell them at a discount to MBC.

Multnomah should take this opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce automobile congestion and supply a safe, secure place for students to park their bikes.
