Campus services improves grounds with new park

A new park is under construction between Bradley Hall and the Travis-Lovitt seminary building. In the area formerly called "the boneyard," Campus Services is now fertilizing and planting seed. The plot has been under construction since the end of the 2003 school year when Campus Services relocated its shops next to the A-Frame.

According to John Jorgensen, maintenance supervisor, the area will include large strips of grass, trees and shrubs, a courtyard and a fountain with benches and a patio roof. The next step involves installing piping and irrigation for the grass because power is already available for the fountain. Workers have applied fertilizer and lime, and the grass has begun growing.

Ron Casey, who supervised the construction, said, "We should see some results within a month, and by next spring it will look finished."

Mr. Casey also commented on the storage area's move: "It's nice in the respect that it's out of the way, but it does make for tight quarters." The area was formerly used to store various equipment, tractors and paint. Now there is no longer any space for the scrap metal pile.

"Since both the Student Commons and Bradley Hall will be extended," Mr. Jorgensen said, "we thought it would be important to have some spill over area of just grass." Funding is not complete, but work is done as funds are available.

"Because there's no building, it's good to have the students involved in all of the project," Mr. Casey said. Several MBC students have helped with the manual labor.

New plans for the Joseph Aldrich Student Commons will mean that the present area behind the commons will contain a building. This is a popular area for students to meet and to relax. Campus Services staff hope the new park will provide overflow for students once the new commons is built.
