Professor Needham to retire

Professor Needham began teaching at MBC in 1963

David C. Needham, distinguished professor and a faculty member at Multnomah Bible College for the past 40 years, is retiring from a full-time position this January.

He is only retiring as a full-time faculty member, however. He will resume teaching classes as an adjunct professor each fall semester. He said he most enjoys teaching those classes.

Professor Needham made his decision because he said he believes that God is asking him to step down. He also said that he doesn't have the energy that he used to. After 40 years, he has taught at least 8,000 students in college and seminary classes.

Curricular changes in the classes are another reason that led him to make this decision.

With his extra time, Professor Needham plans to become more involved in his local church, work on various writing projects and travel with his wife.

He clarified that he is not leaving because he doesn't enjoy teaching anymore. He said that he has had the privilege of "sharing the most marvelous truth in the world" with his students and being around the "dearest people in God's family." Professor Needham said he understands that when Christians aren't accountable to others, they can easily grow complacent in their walk with God. He said that working at Multnomah has required him to deepen his walk with God so he can stay strong in Christ.

growing closer to God has brought him to the understanding that he is the Holy Spirit's "teacher's assistant."

Professor Needham said that the times he has treasured the most were when he felt so evidently loved by students, staff and the entire school.
