Dr. Strickland helps educate church
Dr. Wayne Strickland
Dr. Wayne Strickland, vice president of Multnomah Bible College, listened as MBC alumnus Jerry Gramkow offered Dr. Strickland a chance to work with Focus on the Family. Dr. Strickland agreed to the job and together they laid out the framework for a statement educating the church on sound biblical theology for human sexuality.
The Council on Biblical Sexual Ethics finished the statement, titled "The Colorado Statement on Biblical Sexual Morality". Dr. Strickland, one of the men on the council, said they planned on using the statement as a foundation for teaching youth and college students.
Dr. Strickland, involved in counseling homosexuals in the past, said he wanted to develop materials that would help others involved in ministries to homosexuals. He said education on premarital purity and limitation on sexual expression is needed, especially for males.
Focus on the Family funded the
council to counterattack a new trend in Christian colleges and churches that accepts premarital sex and homosexuality. The council's statement argues against unbiblical statements on sexuality put out by Sexuality Information and Education Council for the United States (SIECUS).
Dr. Strickland said, "SIECUS argues that any form of sexuality [including homosexuality] that is not oppressive or exploitative is permitted." Several religious organizations have signed on with SIECUS. Focus on the Family was concerned because SIECUS said it represented the church's view.
Dr. Strickland said the council will present its statement on the Focus on the Family website in February so that organizations may endorse it online.
The Colorado Statement was submitted on Nov. 17, 2001, to the Evangelical Theological Society, made up of evangelical professors and faculty, and awaits approval.
