Basketball teams play balancing game
Eighteen students on Multnomah's men's and women's basketball teams balance student ministries, homework, and other personal commitments with their love for the game.
The women's team this year includes captain Aimee Calenberg and players Mariko Aihara, Christy Decker, Tiffany Howard, Jane Overall, Tonya Plandel, Bethany Smith, Kristi Smith and Sherina Staton.
Kara Forrar coaches the women. She said women's basketball is more than just fun; it's a challenge. "Our competition is much more experienced," Coach Forrar said. "We're having to play scholarship schools without having as many skills and without enough players."
Coach Forrar said she admires the team's enthusiasm. "If I was playing for a team that lost a game by as much as 40 points, it would kill me, but these [women] are able to brush it off," she said.
Coach Forrar motivates the team by setting goals for each game, by
varying the workouts and by teaching drills and plays in a progressive mode. "We have no wins yet, but we still work hard and focus on our goals," freshman guard Tiffany Howard said.
The men's team includes captain Dave Odell and co-captains Ryan Franklin and Hayden LeRoy. The list of players includes Sam Duke, Matt Hadley, Doug Holcomb, Anthony Janti, Alan Reiman and Josh Thrash. A fresh face on the sidelines, seminary student Noel Schaak is coaching his first year of basketball at Multnomah along with assistant coach Troy Fairley.
Coach Fairley said he and Coach Schaak promote self-motivation and help the players understand that there are not always people around to kick them into getting started in life.
Coach Fairley said the men love the game but are intent on building character and integrity. "[Coach Schaak and I] want to be able to look back and see a lot of growth [both] personally and on the courts," he said.
