This year's basketball team has begun the season with a new coach. Coach Curt Bickley has joined Multnomah's staff.

Coach Vos said that having Coach Bickley on staff has been good and positive. "He fits in really well here," she said. "He's a good addition to the school's program."

This year marks his 12th year of coaching basketball. "Of all the teams I've coached, this is one of the best true teams," Coach Bickley said. "We haven't had any guys arguing with each other." He defined a "true team" as one that practices and plays basketball well and also acts properly off of the court.

"Our main goal this year is to win the regional tournament, which is in February," he said.

He said he has also been impressed by the good character the team has shown even when they've been tired and frustrated.

So far, Coach Bickley said he has been very happy with Multnomah's basketball team. "We've played really hard," he said. "I've been very pleased with what I've seen so far, and I think that this team has a lot of potential."

"He does try to sub more because he wants to keep them fresh," athletic director Coach Lois Vos said. "They get a chance to have a break, so they can go hard while they're out there."

The team has many new players this year and has been working on getting to know how they fit together as a team, guard Adam Smith said. "We're improving a lot," he said.

Isaac Myers, a forward on this year's team, said, "So far, we're starting to play as a team." He said the team is getting ready for regionals and the start of its second season. "We've still got a lot more to look forward to."

Coach Bickley has taken the place of former basketball coach Chris Reese, who left Multnomah after taking a position as the men's basketball coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. This summer, Coach Bickley, his wife, Melissa, and their four children moved from Santa Maria, Calif., to Portland.
