New Players Boost Hopes

Well, basketball fans, the season is off to an exciting start. Nov. 11-13 the Multnomah Ambassador men's basketball team hosted a tournament with West Coast teams traveling from as far away as California.

In Multnomah's first game against West Coast Baptist, the two teams battled to keep the lead. The score fluctuated with first one team and then the other being ahead by two to four points, leaving the crowd at the edge of its seats.

The Ambassadors beat West Coast Baptist in the last seconds by three points. Multnomah lost its second game to Life Pacific and won its third game against Columbia.

Team member Isaac Meyers said the game against Columbia was an exciting win for the team because the Ambassadors were down by 17 points at half time and came back to beat Columbia by nine points. He said seeing the team rally for the win after being behind at half time was awesome and gave the team confidence.

Meyers said that Multnomah has a good team this year, partly because Coach Curt Bickley recruited several players -- Don Wilder, Jesse Cain, Ben Easton and Matt Nelson -- who really help out the team. "We have a lot of motivated players," he said.

Team member Anthony Janti, a senior at MBC, said that the team has everything it needs to have a winning season. "We have more height than last year," Janti said, which helps when shooting under the basket, blocking shots and rebounding.

Along with discipline, motivation and skill, Ambassador team members said that Matt Nelson gives the games and practices a positive atmosphere. Nelson is known for being cheerful even before 6 a.m.

One new addition to the Multnomah men's basketball program is the junior varsity team. Janti said adding JV benefits the varsity team. Instead of cutting all but 15 players at the beginning of the season, the coach appoints some of the players who try out initially to the JV team.

They learn the plays and hope to improve so they can move up to the varsity level during the season or replace the seniors who will leave the following year. JV helps the players and the coach to build a better team.
