Cold treat brings varied emotions

Multnomah Bible College and Seminary students like ice cream. Ninety-two percent of 50 students surveyed enjoy having ice cream available during meals in the cafeteria. The simple phrase, "I like it," was the exact response of five students regarding the ice cream's availability. Some students were quite concerned that the ice cream was going to be removed because of the survey.
Besides the easy access, students said they also enjoyed having the ice cream cost included in their meal plan. Freshman Kelly Bryant, 18, said she thinks ice cream in the cafeteria is great because she doesn't have extra money to spend on it. She eats around 10 scoops of ice cream per week. Others said at former schools they would have had to pay extra for the ice cream.
Sophomore Sheri Stafford, 20, likes her two to three scoops each week, but said, "They warn us about the freshman 15, and then they always have it [ice cream] out, even for breakfast."
Freshman Andrew Adams, 18, and sophomore Christy Gilbert, 21, said that all-you-can-eat ice cream requires self-control. Sophomore Dan Robinson, 19, said, "It's nice for dessert, but you can get out of control."
Some students focus on the nice dessert and don't worry about self-control. Freshman Bekah Keel, 18, eats more than 10 scoops of ice cream per week. She said, "You can never have too much ice cream."
Junior Steve Heckman, 22, holds the ice cream record at 25 scoops of ice cream per week. Second place is sophomore Kyle Mellander, 19, who said he eats 16 scoops each week.
Not counting Heckman or Mellander, the average scoops per week is 4.5 for both men and women in the sophomore and junior classes. In comparison, the freshman average is 4.1 scoops. Men and women grads eat fewer than one scoop per week.
In general, men eat more ice cream per week than women. Only two of the men surveyed, both grads, didn't eat ice cream. Scott Frazier, a grad, said he doesn't eat ice cream because he has to have sugar-free ice cream, which Multnomah doesn't offer.
Another grad, Erik Boehme, eats more than the grad average of 1.8 scoops of ice cream per week. He eats between five and six scoops. He said he has to try all the new flavors. "Japan only had strawberry, vanilla and chocolate ice cream," he said. He also believes American ice cream comes in containers that are too big and encourage people to eat too much.
Twenty-five men and 25 women of all ages participated in a face-to-face survey at lunch and dinner in the cafeteria. They answered the questions, "How many scoops of ice cream do you eat per week?" and "How do you feel about having ice cream so readily available?"
