Cheerleaders focus on unity

The cheerleaders practice one of their cheers in the weight room.

The focus of Multnomah's cheerleading squad this year is unity and fun. Six freshman girls are on Multnomah's cheer squad. Tami Birman and Tiffany Engstrom are the squad's co-captains. Christina Stanton, Jen Yee, Kym Blackstock and Becky Wanamaker make up the rest of the squad's cheerleaders.

"[We want to] end the season as good of friends as when we started," said Cheryl Reese, this year's cheer squad adviser.

The squad practices twice a week. One practice is an hour long, the other 90 minutes. During each practice, the team reviews cheers, prays and strives to learn something new.

One of the squad's struggles this year is not having a coach. However, the team's two captains, Birman and Engstrom, each have a lot of experience in cheering. "The other girls are all very willing to learn," Mrs. Reese said.

The women tried out to be part of the squad. They were required to perform two cheers and answer questions in an interview.

Beth Coleman celebrates her 20th birthday this month.
