Gym has new weight equipment

Iyesha Lynch, a freshman, uses the new weight equipment for her weight lifting class.

Multnomah Bible College's athletic department has added new Universal weight lifting equipment to the Lytle Gym's weight room on Oct. 29 -- at least new to Multnomah. MBC purchased the 5-year-old equipment from a Corvallis health club for $11,500 after the club decided to upgrade. The athletic department also bought mirrors and placed them on the walls of the weight room's indoor and outdoor entrances.

Lois Vos, MBC's assistant athletic director, saw a sale notice for the equipment, and as a joke, showed it to Coach Chris Reese. Coach Reese looked at the advertisement and began searching for a way to obtain the funds to buy the equipment. The administration gave the athletic department an $11,500 loan.

According to Coach Vos, the weight equipment, worth $23,000 when bought new, is more efficient than MBC's old equipment. The new equipment isolates certain muscles and works them rather than using more muscles to do one function as the old equipment did. "We felt like our other stuff was outdated," Coach Vos said. Also, the old equipment had begun to cause concerns about user safety, Coach Vos said.

The athletic department needs to repay the loan by July 1, 2000. To raise funds, Coach Vos said that the department is thinking of holding a jog-a-thon or other similar events.

The new equipment consists of several pieces including a tricep press, a bicep curl, a seated leg curl, a leg extension, a lat pull-down, a shoulder press, a seated chest press, a seated row, a roto-crunch, an incline press and a seated leg press.

Coach Vos said that the athletic department would like to purchase a new Stairmaster and treadmill. "It's just a matter of money," she said.
