The World Seen is a ministry team of Multnomah Bible College.  Formed in the Fall of 1999, Dr. Ray Lubeck and several students saw the need and enormous potential for communicating the concepts of worldviews in contemporary society to Christian youth.  One reason is that in today's world of diversity of opinions, teenagers need help in understanding the pop culture which surrounds them and offers conflicting perspectives on the most important questions of life:  Is there a God?  How can I find truth?   Is there a meaning to life?  Where did we come from?  What happens at death?  Who can I trust?  Where is the world heading?  Another reason is that in order to communicate intelligently and compassionately with those holding to other worldviews, we must first understand them--their basic framework of thinking and what "counts" as a good argument.  Thus our goal is not merely to expose other ways of thinking, but to consider how life looks through their eyes, and to increase our concern and care for them.  A third reason is to help youth better understand the messages being communicated to them through the various media of pop culture so that they are more aware and discerning of the potential influences these messages might have upon them.

Since that time, upper class students at Multnomah are specially selected each year to serve on this ministry team.  They meet twice a week, enrolling in an advanced theology class.  Each class period they bring to class current examples of frequently aired songs, television and movie clips, art forms, advertising, articles, websites, etc. for discussion and careful analysis.  Thus the World Seen presentation is in a constant state of updating and revision.  For this reason, to this point no two presentations have ever been identical.  Our desire is to keep the material as current and fresh as possible.

I am interested in learning more about differing worldviews and in how to portray these to students.

mendenhallRachael Hockenson, WA
Sophomore, Bible & Elementary Education majors

I really enjoyed watching the presentation and so I want to be a part of it. It’s not only a lot of fun, but I really gain a lot of wisdom through the experience.

Sophomore, Bible Major; English Minor

I love analyzing the cuture in which we live, and how we subconsciously absorb messages through the media. I also love sharing this knowledge with others. World Seen is the perfect blend of information and creative presentation, and a way to combine my passion for teaching youth with my interest in worldviews and culture.

mendenhallTim Eugene, OR
Bible & Youth Ministries Majors; Greek Minor

I'm a Young Life leader and I run into non-christian high school kids all the time. In the high schools in Portland there are a number of different beliefs and the more I know about their world view and mine the more effective I'll be in ministering to them.

mendenhallChip Gresham, OR  Junior
Bible major & Greek minor

I find learning why other people believe what they do to be very interesting. In the World Seen we offer a very in-depth look at popculture, and where we are at as a society in this class. Studying these trends and how they effect people's everyday life and decisions is a truly fascinating subject.

Bible Majors, Psychology Minor

World Seen gives me a reason to engage in culture and an avenue to make a difference. I've learned how to love God more and how to love others more through this experience and hope and pray our presentations cause the same change in others.

mendenhallJoe Arlington, WA Junior
Bible & Church Leadership Majors

I see a huge need for the Church in America to understand the context in which we live. We need to be able to understand the people in our communities so that we can more effectively reach and relate to them. Also I am really excited to be a part of a ministry that takes this information to the Christian youth of today.

erinErin Vancouver, WA
Junior Bible major & Journalism minor

I know that being on World Seen encourages me in my faith and challenges me as I discover how others in the world think and feel. With an open heart, I want to learn how best to respect and love those who see things differently. This will be an amazing year; I'm looking forward to getting to know and grow with such a great team as we teach others about worldviews!

joiJoy Modesto, CA Junior Bible major Being on the team challenges me to think more consistently and to have more compassion for others.

mendenhallAli Miles City, MT Sophomore, Bible & Journalism majors I need to become more aware of the culture around me. Sometimes, I can see myself get into my own little Christian world and then it's hard to understand where non-Christians are coming from. Learning about the world around us is crucial to reaching out to it.

Ben Palmer, AK Sophomore
Bible & Ed Min (Outdoor Leadership) Majors, History Minor

Ben and Sommer are interested in being a part of the World Seen team because we have witnessed so many youth that have failed to question the view that this World has thrown at them.  So often they blindly follow the media, music, and trends of this world. Through World Seen we hope help youth regain a sense of self as they come to better understand the different views of this world and the one who came to save it. see a huge need for the Church in America to understand the context in which we live.
