“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” –Frederick Buechner
Where I come from
I am a Northwest native through and through—born in Portland, Oregon and brought up in a rural setting outside Banks, Oregon. I went to college in Newberg, Oregon and then began my professional career at the junior high in Forest Grove that I attended in my youth. I worked in private and public schools for a decade before moving to Vancouver, Washington to start a private Christian high school with my husband, Roger.
Why I teach at Multnomah
I love Multnomah’s mission and purpose. We are fervent about building up the body of Christ through higher education. More specific to my discipline, where else can students find a double major in Bible & Theology and Teacher Education? We have a unique program because we are committed to providing students a thorough Bible & Theology education while at the same time fully equipping them as classroom teachers for public or private school settings.
Current ministry outside class
I am part of the worship team at Calvary Community Church in Camas, Washington. I also do retreat speaking for women’s groups and seminars at educational conferences as well as sit on the board of Come and See Africa (CASA), an organization that is working to provide biblical and theological training in Rwanda.
People who inspire you
I love several Catholic writers—Henri Nouwen and Thomas Merton, to name two. In these two writers, I find humility and an unremitting passion to know and serve the Lord. As for the “still living,” I am inspired by common people who do their best to follow Christ every day.
Favorite Bible verse
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12, 13b, 14)
Extra-curricular, non-ministry activities
I am an avid reader and try to read through at least two books a month. I also love to hike, walk, or in any way get into nature to be in the presence of God’s beautiful creation. I love working out (it keeps me sane) and spending time with family and friends. I also like buying shoes. A lot.
I have been married to Roger Miller since 1983, and we have two children, Grant (23) and Melissa (21), who is a senior at Multnomah in the teacher education program.
