Professor, Bible and Theology
D.Th., University of South Africa
M.A., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
B.S., Multnomah Bible College
Hired in 1991
My name (and officially preferred title) is Ray. I was born a Texan to Canadian parents and German grandparents. I grew up in deserts, but now I live in green, green Portland. I like smoked oyster pizza, playing acoustic guitar and 5-string fretless bass, hanging with students and friends and grandkids, and watching “wildlife” like Seahawks and Ducks. I’ve taught at Multnomah for over two centuries (in dog years). I’ve had my ‘stache for 10.0 years (in Celsius). And I’ve been happily married for over four decades (in normal years) to my wife, Tamara (actually, far better than normal).
After graduating from Multnomah, I attended five different graduate schools in four different countries on three different continents. I am now a professor and so I still go to school every day. And I’m thankful for that every morning!
Writing
I’ve written Reading the Bible for a Change (2 eds.) and Swallowing Jonah: Strategies for Reading Biblical Narratives, edited Ed Goodrick’s Is My Bible the Inspired Word of God?, and contributed book chapters, articles, papers, and reviews for a number of publications.
Ministry
My wife and I are actively engaged in our church, including involvement in preaching, teaching, and worship team.
Most of all, I desire to grow in my love life with Jesus, my wife, my family, my church, my students, my community and with others.

“As a man’s real power grows and his knowledge widens, ever the way he can follow grows narrower: until at last he chooses nothing, but does only and wholly what he must do” – Ursula LeGuin
“I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” –E. B. White
