A good friend of mine teaching here at MU invited me to join in helping develop students here. This involved me serving as the Chair of the Department of Church Leadership (back then it was called Pastoral Ministry) which included the opportunity to redevelop the curriculum of the program. The privilege of engaging and training women and men who would practice redemptive leadership in the church captured my imagination. The joy of this keeps me here.
I began serving as an inner-city missionary for a church in Decatur, GA as a freshman in college in 1980. In 1990 my home church in Canton, Ohio, ordained me to plant an urban church, and in 1992 Missions Door appointment me as an urban missionary. From those early years until now, I have served in starting 3 churches, restarting or renewing 4 churches, and developing leadership for numerous other churches which include diversity in socio-economic class, (dis)ability, ethnicity, race, age, and gender. I received awards in preaching and Christian Service in college and seminary and graduated from Seminary with high honors.
I believe that the local church is the presence of Christ on earth through the empowering Holy Spirit and that this community brings the message of the best life possible for those who will hear it. I am grateful that I get to participate with women and men here at MU to develop leadership to live this out.
One of my favorite interests are my wife and four children. I find all five of them intriguing. I also enjoy friends who through decades of life’s sorrows and joys have sustained me. I find my interests drawn to random activities my family and friends enjoy. If alone, I like to read, listen to music, and wonder.
Portland and the Great Northwest offers so much to enjoy outdoors. I listed a few of the many on my life of favorites (I like too many of them): hiking, biking, kayaking, and walking on the beach. Portland also boasts a wonder culture for those indoor times and a few of my favorites include good coffee, great restaurants, several rocking museums, and live concerts and theaters.
