Multnomah University’s Department of Emergency Management and Campus Safety operates under the guidance of its Director of Emergency Management/Campus Safety. The Campus Safety Division of this department oversees the operation of on-duty officers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year through the leadership of Staff Officers and a Deputy Director of Campus Safety. All of the department’s officers are certified as Unarmed Professionals through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), as well as Red Cross certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED use.
Multnomah University’s Campus Safety officers have jurisdiction over the university’s property, which extends from the Montavilla Park fence line to the sidewalks bordering NE Pacific Street, NE 87th Ave, and NE Glisan Street. Additionally, Campus Safety officers have the authority to conduct investigations of persons, vehicles, and activities/events in order to determine the risk factor they pose to the campus facility and/or its users. Officers may request identification of persons on campus, issue verbal trespass notices, written exclusion notices, and vehicle citations.
While officers patrol campus regularly and monitor strategically placed security cameras, the primary line of defense that we have is the University’s students, staff, and faculty. Officers simply cannot be everywhere at once, and as such we rely on the community to inform us of incidents across campus.
While Multnomah University ranks as second in the state of Oregon for safest institutions of higher education, it is imperative to note that the University’s special demographics opens it up to specific challenges. Notably, thefts are among the most common crimes we encounter. Fortunately, there are significant steps that can be taken to help reduce the risk that one faces of becoming a victim of theft as well as help promote a safer campus environment as a whole. One specific example is: do not leave valuables, or anything resembling valuables, in plain sight and/or unattended – whether that be in your car, in the student center, or in any buildings. If you see suspicious behavior, please contact Campus Safety at 503.251.6499. If you see a crime in-progress, please contact Portland Police (9-1-1 for emergencies and 503.823.3333 for non-emergencies) and then Campus Safety.
Multnomah University’s Campus Safety division maintains a close working relationship with the Portland Police Bureau and other local law enforcement agencies. It is particularly important that each member of the campus community take an active role in maintaining campus safety and security.
